Academic Block
All plans

A full academic reference manager embedded in your document. Add sources by DOI, ISBN, title search, or manually. Choose a citation style and the block renders a formatted reference list. Inline citations (via @ trigger) link back to the bibliography and auto-update when sources change.

Adding a Bibliography block

/ → Bibliography
Type /bibliography or /references on any empty block.
Block palette
Click + on any block → Academic → Bibliography.

Adding sources

Use the lookup bar at the top of the block to add sources automatically or add them manually field by field.

1
Lookup by DOI, ISBN, or title

Paste a DOI (e.g. 10.1038/nature12373), an ISBN, or a title search into the lookup bar and press Enter. The block queries CrossRef (for DOIs and titles) or Open Library (for ISBNs) and prefills all available fields.

2
Review and save

The new source opens in an expanded editor. Check the auto-filled fields, add anything missing (pages, volume, issue), and collapse. The reference list updates immediately.

3
Cite inline

In any text block, type @ followed by the author name or title to open the citation picker. Select a source to insert an inline citation node. The node renders using the current citation style and stays in sync if the source is edited.

Citation styles

StyleHeadingInline format
APA 7thReferences(Author, Year)
MLA 9thWorks Cited(Author page)
ChicagoBibliography[N] footnote number
HarvardReference List(Author, Year)
VancouverReferences[N] number

Switch styles from the gear icon in the block header. The reference list and all inline citation nodes in the document update immediately.

Source types

Six source types are supported, each with relevant field sets:

  • Journal article — author, year, title, journal, volume, issue, pages, DOI, URL
  • Book — author, year, title, publisher, URL
  • Website — author, year, title, URL
  • Conference paper — author, year, title, journal/proceedings, pages, DOI, URL
  • Thesis — author, year, title, publisher (used as the institution field), URL
  • Other — author, year, title, journal, publisher, DOI, URL (not volume, issue, or pages)

Inline citations

Type @ in any text block to open the citation picker — a floating dropdown showing all sources in the bibliography block. Filter by author name, title, or year. Select a source to insert a citation node.

Citation node
Renders as a colored inline chip (e.g. "(Smith, 2024)" or "[3]") using the active citation style. Clicking the node scrolls to the bibliography block.
Live sync
Citation nodes listen for changes to the bibliography. If you edit a source's author or year, all inline citations for that source update automatically.
Missing source
If a citation references a source that was deleted, it renders as [?].
The Bibliography block uses a server-side security container in the editor — edit access is verified server-side before any metadata write. On published pages, the block renders in read-only mode without any authentication required.
